Pulpotomy in Auburn, AL

A pulpotomy is an endodontic approach to treating a minor (or localized) infection inside a tooth. While other procedures, like root canals or pulpectomies, involve removing all of the damaged tissues inside the roots or pulp chamber, a pulpotomy leaves behind some of the healthy pulp, making it an effective option for patients trying to preserve their natural teeth. This minimally invasive technique can help elevate your oral health and quality of life by relieving pain and preventing the spread of infection. At Endodontic Associates of East Alabama in Auburn, AL, Dr. William Looney and our team focus on saving natural teeth whenever possible. We use treatments like pulpotomies paired with advanced technology and straightforward guidance so that you can make informed decisions about your care. If you're dealing with tooth pain or sensitivity, we're here to help you protect your smile and prevent long-term damage.

We perform pulpotomies at Endodontic Associates of East Alabama with our patients' comfort in mind, using anesthesia to help limit any potential discomfort during your procedure. We'll begin by examining your tooth to determine if a pulpotomy is the best option, or if a more extensive treatment like a pulpectomy or root canal may be needed. After isolating the tooth to keep it clean and dry, Dr. Looney will carefully remove only the infected pulp, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible, before sealing the area to prevent reinfection. In most cases, he'll finish the pulpotomy procedure with a temporary filling or crown, which your dentist will replace with a permanent restoration in the future. Most patients experience mild discomfort for 24 – 48 hours and fully recover within 3 – 7 days, allowing a quick return to daily activities.

If you're dealing with tooth pain or infection, a pulpotomy could be the gentle solution you need to save your natural tooth and avoid more invasive treatments. Designed to remove damaged tissue while preserving healthy pulp, this procedure provides a number of benefits, including:

  • Offers a minimally invasive alternative to root canals or pulpectomies
  • Relieves pain and discomfort quickly
  • Prevents infection from spreading to nearby teeth or tissue
  • Preserves your natural tooth to avoid extraction
  • Restores normal chewing, speaking, and comfort

Great "bedside manner" - Dr. Looney was professional, kind and attentive. He listened so carefully that he addressed questions that I hadn't actually asked, but he intuitively knew I wanted answers to. He read my forms and asked questions about my prior career, showing interest. He was kind, proactive and made sure I left my appointment with everything I needed. The procedure was done efficiently with as little discimfort as possible. I strongly recommend Dr. Looney if you want a quality and caring experience. I drove 220 miles round trip and it was well worth it!

This doctor is very caring. He went above and beyond to get my pain under control. I had one root canal and continued to have pain. He saw me (without a scheduled appointment) and did another root canal on a tooth next to the first infected one. I am praying this will resolve the issues but if not, it is certainly not a reflection on Dr. Looney. He has thorough, quick and most of all, compassionate. The office personnel were great as well.

My dentist did a root canal about 20 years ago and for some reason it went bad and he recommended that I see a specialist because of the difficulty of redoing one. I choose Dr. Looney from my dentist's recommendation and because his practice accepted my Southland Dental Insurance. The Dr. and his assistants did a great job, my root canal went fine, and my insurance covered the entire amount due, I was even refunded the co-pay. I hope I never need another one, but if I do I will see Dr Looney.
